About the Tribute

Artist Michael Clapper’s sculptures have been installed in public places across the country. He was chosen to design "Beacon of the Sentinel" through a rigorous public process in 2019.

Clapper’s goal for the Military Tribute in Pendleton is to honor the fact that our five military branches are proudly keeping watch over our nation, always.

The modernist beacon in the sculpture represents the five branches of the military, and the star-shaped pergola represents the people of our nation. The beacon will shine its protective light up, through, and over the top of the pergola, conveying strength and protection.
